The Evergreen Diary

shed 2Welcome – My name is Haile and I live in Central England (Birmingham) with my Husband, two children, four chickens, two dogs and two cats. I long for Goats, but sadly a suburban 1950s semi is just no place for them. Our home garden is the same as our children, small, slightly wild and never really looking tidy, despite the amount of time spent on them.

Allotment Diary and Garden –  We have a new (June 2017) half plot Allotment 19b, still early days, but the plan is for this to be Organic, and to produce lots of vegetables, fruit and herbs for eating, storing and making. Follow my allotment diary month by month to find out whats happening on 19b. We are new to vegetable growing on a bigger scale, so any advice always welcome and I hope to include lots of ideas for not only growing but recipes, storing and making. The plot will be 100% Organic, so is being created to attract wildlife and with a view to having its own perfectly balanced mini life eco-system.

Herbs – For me, Herbs are magical things, they are not only the medicine cabinet of the world but have histories, folklore and characters all of their own. Click on the ‘Herbs’ menu to find information about Herbs, including growing, storing and historical usage.

Folklore and Folk Magic- A personal interest of mine is old English Folklore and Legends, such as the wide array of characters and encounters that sit just outside the path, waiting to leap at our windows, and lead us through misty moors. I am fascinated by the old traditions of healing with herbs, marking the turn of the seasons and plant and animal lore, and besides, who doesn’t need a little more magic in their lives? Even if only lighting a candle and making a wish?

Hedgerow and Wildflowers – Recipes and information about the plants, trees and flowers you may find in a typical Hedgerow. As well as growing herbs and vegetables, I also love to forage and I am a keen identifier of our native flora and fauna.

Home Made – I like to experiment with natural/organic beauty products that are a joy to use, that really work and are from sustainable sources.  I also enjoy making and creating home made beauty products with an emphasis on herbs and everyday food items. Click on ‘Home Made’ for natural home made products and ideas.

Recipes – Click on this menu to find lots of recipes bursting with organic vegetables, herbs and salad straight from the allotment. I am hoping to also use this section to store recipes for storing produce, like pickling etc

Nature – I try to live in harmony with nature and the seasons, eat seasonally, consume sensibly and show nature the respect she deserves from all of us.

Happiest in the woods, allotment or the garden – with either a trowel or a glass of wine (ideally both)

  2. Years ago I helped a friend with her homework for a university anthropology course she was taking with a focus on witchcraft. As part of that work she wrote a paper on the movie, “Bell, Book, and Candle”. We must have watched it a dozen times as we picked out all the hidden and not so hidden symbolisms.

It remains a favourite movie of mine.

    1. I love it too. I love the way it looks in particular. I always feel a little let down by the end though. I much prefer Gillian as a Witch in black selling African and tribal arts, than the pretty coral selling Gillian at the end. Personally I would have stuck with the cat!
